A Story By O Henry

One day, Dan was on a voyage to a city very far away, where he meets a very self centered and talkative guy name Brad. Brad seemed to be a very talkative guy while Dan was a very good listener. Dan has no option other than to talk to this fellow passenger and he doesn’t even bother how boastful Brad could be. After knowing each other, Brad starts to blow his own horn and finally tells one of his stories where he got romantic for the first time in his life. He tells the story of how he got a very beautiful wife. His story goes like this.
In his town where he lived, Brad used to be the ugliest man but he had a very soothing voice and with his talk he could impress anyone. He had a friend named Fred who was the most handsome guy in town but he could never talk in a very convincing manner. Both of them had some drawback of their own in their personalities.
One day Fred talks about a girl with whom he fell in love. He would regularly see the girl in a mall in the afternoon. There, they both used to exchange sights and that was it. Both of them used to see each other but they had never talked in person. Fred comes up with a very good scheme of acquiring his love. He asks for some help from Brad. He tells Brad to visit the girl’s house in the darkest nights and talk to her on behalf of Fred. After thinking for a long time Brad agrees. Now Brad had to do the talking to the girl in the dark hours where she could not even see his face. So, one night Brad sets up to visit the girl’s house who happened to be a daughter of the retired sergeant. He puts on a heavy dark cloak and sneaks to the girl’s house from the back of the compound when she would appear at the windows from her room. This goes for many days and finally, the girl agrees to marry Fred. Brad just did the talking and finally he is able to seduce the girl for Fred.
So, Fred is the happiest man in the world, he insists Brad to see her once before, they both get married. Brad agrees to see the girl with whom he had talked for hours in the dark for many a days. So they both go to the mall where the girl would come by in the afternoon. The girl then arrives and share quick glance with Fred. She doesn’t even bother to see or notice if anyone’s standing beside him. They just exchange quick glances and that was it.

But when, Brad sees the girl, he too falls in love and in no way he would now let go off the girl. Both of them argue over the matter. Fred also tells Brad that he has already talked to the girl’s father and thus an engagement ceremony had already been fixed. He then, also invites Brad to the reception.
At the ceremony the next day, Brad walks up to the girl and tells everything. The girl is now in dilemma and gets into confusion. She now has to choose an ugly man with beautiful voice or a handsome hunk with disgusting voice. However, Fred tells Brad that they were leaving the town, the next day.

The next day, Brad also boards the ship in which the girl and Fred were travelling. But the previous night, Brad had indulged himself in heavy drinking and now he is having problem with his throat. He lost his voice. Somehow he managed to find a compounder who gives him some medicine to clear his throat. He then gulps a tablet and waits for his voice to recover.

Without his voice, he can never propose the girl and now it seemed like if he’s lost the race. He tries to shout but to no avail. He sadly walks up to the girl, she looks at him but says nothing. Brad says to the girl, “I love you, please marry me”. To a great surprise, his voice spurted at the right time. He was surprised and was very happy at the same time. The girl then decides to marry Brad and forgets Fred.

After marrying the girl, Brad thinks about the tonic which cured his voice. He was very grateful to the compounder and the tonic as well. He thinks that the tonic is a miracle and no tonic is more worthy in any regards.

After telling this story Brad turns to Don and says, “I am planning to start a retail shop which sells that tonic. Do you like to try it once?”

There is a rich landlord named Anthony. He is very wealthy and lives a retired life. His son has just come home in years after completing his college. One day Anthony calls his son and asks him about his expenses on clothes and etc. Anthony asks, “Son, how much do you spend on soap?” The son replies, “12 dollar for a dozen” The father again, “How much do you spend on clothes?” “60 dollars” was the reply. The father then appeals to his son to spend more money as he as a lot fo money his account. A small debate heats up between the father and the son. The father says that everything can be bought with money but the son doesn’t agree. The son says, “There are things which money can’t buy” The father is disgusted with his sons hypothesis.

The father then gets personal and asks, “What’s her name?” The son is shocked and later reveals his love towards a girl. The father again says, “You are a good looking man, you have a college degree and most importantly I have enough money to spend on you, go ahead and propose the girl”. The son says, “It’s too late dad, the girl is leaving the city tomorrow for two years. But I have the permission to see her once before leaving. It would only be for a couple of minutes. We will meet at the crossroad and we’ll take a cab to the train station. That is it, I don’t have time.”

Anthony then tells his son to meet the girl at any condition. The son tells him that if he ever meet her, there would be no time to propose her, and if he ever proposed, it would be way too late.

Later that night, Anthony’s sister visits them. Upon finding the son’s story, she walks up to him and hands him a golden ring. She tells him that his mother had left it for him and she had also asked her to give the ring only when he finds someone he loves. So this was the right opportunity to give him the ring which she believes the ring to bring good luck.

The next day, the junior is on his way to see his girl for one final chance. They meet at a crossroad and they hurry towards train station in a cab. The mother would be waiting for the girl at the train station with all her luggage. So this was the only period when he would be with the girl, just a cab drive from the crossroad to the train station, an eight minute drive.

When they were moving towards the train station, the boy asks the cab driver to stop the cab, he says he dropped the ring and he hated losing the ring. The girl on the other hand is running out of time as she might miss the train. Then the boy returns back to the cab with the ring. He apologizes to the girl. When the cab was about to move ahead, a small car blocks their way, and while trying to back, another big truck comes out of nowhere and they get blocked. Slowly the whole street is jumbled up in the heaviest traffic jam. In no way, the girl would now reach the train station in time. The policemen arrive at the scene but could not clear the blockade.
In the evening Anthony’s sister comes home and tells Anthony the entire story about the blockades and all. She also tells him that his son has finally proposed the girl who has agreed to marry him in future. Anthony is happy to hear this. His sister tells him that the good thing happened just because of the ring and there would have been nothing his wealth could have done. Anthony on the other hand doesn’t show any interest on this and says, “Hey sister, I am on the last chapter of a pirate saving his chest full of treasure in a sinking ship. He knows the value of wealth more than anyone else does. Let me finish the chapter first.”

The next morning, a man comes to their home and meets Anthony. The man handles Anthony a list containing a lot of expenses. He say, “I’ve spend 300 dollars on my own and thus the total amount now sums up to 1300 dollars.” Anthony write the amount in his cheque book and replies, “I’m happy that you did everything at the right time.”

“Yes” the man replies, “But the big truck cost me more, the little cars agreed at 5 dollars each, the labours were a bit costly and I almost got into trouble dealing with traffic officer, so i had to pay 300 dollars to one and 150 to the other. But sir, everything went well and everyone was there at the right time.”

Anthony asks that man, “Did you see a fat man wearing only shorts, carrying a bow and arrow?” The man replied, “No, I did not, had there been any man like you said, the police would have surely arrested him”. Anthony replies, “I thought he would not show up at the right time”.
